If you strive to be on the cutting edge of decorating trends, then you probably already have heard: the 2019 Pantone® Color of the Year is PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral.
This vibrant and cheerful hue is imbued with an underlying sense of calm and appeals to a wide range of people. If you haven’t seen it yet, Living Coral will used in fashion, home décor and countless other places.
Who’s Pantone and how can they determine the color of the year?
Since 1963, the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM® has been the go-to tool for color standardization using a proprietary number system and chip format. Originally created for print materials and packaging, this global color standard now has an additional category for fashion and product design which includes textiles, coatings, pigments and plastics.
With more than 10 million designers and producers relying on Pantone’s products and services to help deliver consistent quality—and offering a library of 2,678 solid colors—they’ve kinda earned the right to declare a color of the year. Here’s how they describe this year’s choice:
“Vibrant, yet mellow PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment… Representing the fusion of modern life, PANTONE Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.”
Put coral to work
While some people take the bold step of decorating a room using Living Coral as the main color, others may prefer to use it as an accent hue. When paired with predominantly black or navy furniture and accessories, coral pillows bring softness and sunshine into the room with a powerful punch of color.
Similarly, Living Coral curtains, vases or artwork can take a white- or cream-colored room from sterile to stunning. And while many of us generally think of using color in living rooms or bedrooms, coral can be a beautiful touch in a neutral kitchen or one that features stainless steel appliances—a mason jar filled with cheerful blooms and eye-popping linens can give your kitchen a brand-new, welcoming vibe.
Go bold or go home
If you’re ready to amp up the fun factor, consider pairing Living Coral with a complementary color like PANTONE 3242 C, which is a lovely shade of light aqua—this combo works well in a variety of mediums including print, digital, fashion and décor. You can see some examples of this appealing combination on Pantone’s Instagram and Facebook accounts.
